Airport Lounges: When They’re Worth It & How I Get In
My lounge experiences, long layovers at Changi, and how I use airline status and credit cards to make the wait more comfortable.

I appreciate airport lounges most when I have a long layover. After hours of traveling, having somewhere comfortable to sit, get something to eat, charge my phone, and wait for the next flight makes a real difference, especially when the alternative is spending the afternoon moving between crowded gate areas. But I don’t see much point in arriving at the airport early just to eat at a lounge. If I’m making the journey longer to fit in a buffet, I’m not sure I’ve gained very much.
Much of my flying has been with oneworld, including travel as an Emerald member, and that has given me plenty of chances to use airline lounges. In the U.S., though, many of the everyday airline clubs started to feel familiar very quickly: similar seating, a fairly basic spread, and enough comfort to get through a wait without necessarily making the lounge a highlight of the trip. I’ve also visited American Express Centurion Lounges in several cities, and the experience has varied from one location to another.
Back in Southeast Asia, I find lounge access easier to put to use across the routes I fly. My U.S. Amex Platinum gives me a Priority Pass membership that I prefer having available, particularly when the alternative at KLIA is another crowded Plaza Premium visit. When I’m departing from Kuala Lumpur and my flight and access allow it, I usually choose Malaysia Airlines’ Golden Lounge in the Satellite Building instead. The space, comfortable seating, food selection, and smoking room make it a more useful place for me to spend the time I already need to wait.
01 / The time you already have
When does a lounge actually improve the trip?
A long connection is the clearest example, especially if I’ve come off an overnight flight and still have several hours before the next one. A seat where I can leave my bag beside me, a proper meal, and a place to plug everything in are useful enough; a shower can make the wait considerably better when one is available and included. The benefit comes from what I can do with that waiting time, rather than from the name above the entrance.
For a short departure, I look at how much time I’ll have after check-in, immigration, security, and the walk to the lounge. A flight leaving in two hours does not give me two hours inside, and boarding may begin while I’m still trying to find a table. If I’m paying separately, or using one of a small number of annual visits, I’d rather save it for a connection where I can settle in. A coffee near the gate is sometimes the better choice, particularly if the lounge is a detour and I’m only going to have time to eat quickly.
Traveling with other people changes that decision too. A card that works well for me alone can be expensive when guests are charged individually, while a shared allowance can disappear quickly on a family trip. I count people and visits before I count destinations: two eligible cardholders using a shared quota at the outbound airport and again during a connection can consume four entries before they’ve even reached the hotel.
For me, the best lounge is one I can actually reach, get into, and use comfortably during the time I already have.

Why lounge access feels different in the U.S., Europe, and Asia
The U.S.: plenty of airline clubs, fewer useful alternatives on my routes
In the U.S., the familiar airline brands dominate much of the lounge conversation: Admirals Club, United Club, Delta Sky Club, and Alaska Lounge, alongside the growing card-branded networks. During my own trips, the choice of independent lounges was often thinner than I expected, particularly once I narrowed the search to the terminal I could actually use. That is why I don’t judge a Priority Pass membership by its worldwide lounge count. A large global directory is much less persuasive when there is nothing useful on the route I’m taking that afternoon.

My experience of the everyday U.S. airline clubs was often quite repetitive, with a basic food spread and a similar approach to seating and service from one visit to the next. I’m more interested in whether there is a comfortable seat and something I want to eat than in collecting another lounge visit simply because I can.

On that Seattle trip, I used my Malaysia Airlines Gold / oneworld Sapphire status before flying to Seoul on Hawaiian Airlines and continuing to Kuala Lumpur with Malaysia Airlines. In Dallas, I also used my Platinum airline-fee credit for a lounge purchase. The credit covers eligible charges from my selected airline.
Centurion Lounges: LAX has been the busiest for me
I’ve visited Centurion Lounges in several cities, including Los Angeles (LAX), Seattle, and Phoenix. I understand the appeal: the food spread feels closer to what I expect from lounges in Asia than from the everyday U.S. airline clubs I kept using. LAX has been the busiest in my experience. Phoenix has generally been fine and not especially crowded.

A digital check-in or waitlist is not a guaranteed reservation. American Express lets eligible U.S. cardmembers check in through its app and join a waitlist where that feature is available, but admission still depends on space. The usual Platinum entry window is within three hours of departure, or within five hours of the connecting flight during a layover, under the current U.S. Platinum terms. I would check those terms before expecting to spend an entire long layover inside. Digital check-in · Access terms

Europe: independent lounges can help, but the terminal comes first
At Heathrow, for example, Priority Pass lists independent options including No1, Plaza Premium, and Club Aspire across different terminals, and some offer advance booking. The practical question is still whether the lounge serves the terminal and departure area on my boarding pass, what time it closes, and whether a booking or an extra fee is involved. An appealing listing in another terminal may be of no use at all. Heathrow directory
Southeast Asia: where I get more use out of my card access
Across the Southeast Asian airports I use, I tend to find more practical opportunities to use independent lounges, alongside the airline lounges available through my ticket or status. Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bangkok, and Jakarta all have multiple options in the current lounge directories, although they are spread across terminals and departure zones. That variety gives my U.S. Platinum’s Priority Pass benefit more opportunities to be useful here than it had on some of my U.S. trips.
Changi: lounge hopping during an eight-to-twelve-hour layover
Changi is one airport where I actually enjoy a bit of lounge hopping. The cheaper tickets I find often come with an eight-to-twelve-hour connection before my onward flight to Los Angeles (LAX) or Penang (PEN). With that much time between flights, lounge access becomes a useful part of the journey. There is room to settle in, move somewhere else for a change of scene, and still have time to freshen up before boarding.
I usually start with Singapore Airlines: SilverKris when my business-class ticket gives me access, or KrisFlyer Gold when I’m eligible through status while flying economy. After that, I move on to other lounges. My U.S.-issued Amex Platinum’s Priority Pass membership gives me options for those independent-lounge stops, and a long Changi connection is one of the times I’m particularly glad to have it.

My favorite place to finish is the Ambassador Transit Lounge. It is small, I have found it less crowded, and getting a shower has been straightforward on my visits. I usually save Ambassador for the last stop so I can shower before the next flight. That simple routine makes an eight-to-twelve-hour wait much more comfortable, especially before the long flight to Los Angeles.
Bangkok and Jakarta: more stops from my travels
Saphire Plaza Premium at Jakarta’s Soekarno–Hatta Airport is one of my favorite lounges in Indonesia. These photographs show lounge seating at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and the Saphire Plaza Premium entrance in Jakarta.

The different ways to get lounge access
The lounge name, the access program, and the bank paying for the visit are three different things. Plaza Premium is a lounge operator; Priority Pass, LoungeKey, and DragonPass are access systems; and your bank decides which benefits come with its particular card. The same reception desk may accept several of them, but the number of included visits, guest policy, and even the locations available to you can differ.
| Access route | How it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Airline ticket or status | An eligible premium-cabin ticket or frequent-flyer status provides access under the airline or alliance rules. | The operating and marketing airline, lounge tier, guest eligibility, and any domestic-flight exceptions. |
| Priority Pass | A membership obtained directly or through a card gives access to participating lounges under that membership’s conditions. | Whether membership includes free visits, enrollment, guest fees, and the lounges shown in your own account. |
| LoungeKey | An eligible bank-card benefit recognizes you through the card or supported access method. | Your issuer’s allowance, any registration requirement, the correct card, and the number of guests recorded. |
| DragonPass / branded apps | Your bank may deliver its benefit through DragonPass, Mastercard Travel Pass, or an Airport Companion app. | The exact app your issuer names, eligibility, spending conditions, and the participating lounge list. |
| Direct card access | The bank has an arrangement with selected lounges, sometimes using the physical card or Smart Traveller app. | The bank’s own list. A Plaza Premium logo does not mean every branch is included. |
| Paid entry | You buy admission from a lounge or an authorized booking channel where available. | Price, length of stay, guests, showers, extras, and whether the lounge is accessible from your flight’s departure area. |
Membership is also not the same thing as unlimited complimentary entry. A paid Priority Pass plan may charge for individual visits, and a bank-issued membership may carry a fixed allowance. I check the benefit attached to the membership I’m actually presenting, rather than assuming that a Priority Pass logo means everything is free. The same applies to restaurants and other airport experiences: appearing in a general directory does not establish that my card’s version of the program includes them. Bali: Tujuwan Lounge through my Malaysia Airlines business-class ticket
When I flew Malaysia Airlines in business class from Bali (DPS) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL), I used Tujuwan Lounge before departure. On that trip, lounge access came with my business-class ticket.

What oneworld status changes
Under the standard oneworld rules, Sapphire members can use eligible business-class or frequent-flyer lounges, while Emerald members can also access eligible first-class lounges. The departing flight generally must be both marketed and operated by a oneworld member airline, and the usual guest allowance is one person traveling on an eligible oneworld flight. Some lounges and itineraries have exceptions, and the U.S. restrictions for status earned through American or Alaska differ from the rules for members of other oneworld programs. oneworld access policy

Why I usually choose the Golden Lounge at KLIA
When I have the choice at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Airlines’ Satellite Golden Lounge is usually where I want to spend the wait. I like the amount of space, the comfortable seating, and having a food spread that gives me more choice, rather than feeling I need to take whatever is left while finding somewhere to sit. The smoking room is another practical reason I prefer it. These are the details I notice over repeated use, and they matter more to me than whether the entrance looks impressive in a photograph.

KLIA has Domestic, Regional, and Satellite Golden Lounges, so I match the lounge to the flight and leave enough time for the gate. The Satellite lounge is in Terminal 1’s Satellite Building, not Terminal 2, and Priority Pass membership by itself does not provide Golden Lounge access. Eligible Malaysia Airlines tickets, Enrich or oneworld status, and the airline’s paid-access products are separate routes in, each with its own conditions. Malaysia Airlines’ lounge information
04 / The card behind the visit
U.S. and Malaysian cards: compare the actual access
I use the U.S.-issued Amex Platinum, and I’m happy to have its Priority Pass membership available when I’m traveling around this region. At KLIA, several Malaysian cards direct people toward the same Plaza Premium locations, and on busy visits they have felt more like a cafeteria than somewhere to relax. Having another access route gives me more options when one lounge is crowded.

The comparison also needs to be fair to Malaysian cards. Some offer a small number of visits at selected airports; others provide worldwide access or an unlimited membership. The Malaysian Amex Platinum Charge Card is a useful example of why the issuing country matters: it also has Priority Pass, but its guest allowance and other lounge arrangements differ from the U.S. product. I would compare my airports, companions, and likely visits first, then look at the annual fee and the rest of the benefits I would actually use.

The checks that save the most trouble
I check the lounge in the app or directory attached to the exact card I’m going to use, then look at the terminal, departure zone, opening hours, and stay limit. I also confirm whether my membership needs to be activated in advance and whether I need the physical card, a membership card, or a QR code. A lounge receptionist can confirm admission, but I don’t expect the desk to know every spending condition or remaining allowance set by my bank.
For guests, I check the count before signing anything at reception. Each eligible traveler should present their own access credential when that is how they intend to enter, rather than letting everyone be recorded as my guests. Children are not automatically free at every lounge, and an age exemption at the lounge can differ from the card program’s guest terms. With a shared bank quota, I track how many entries the party will use across the full journey, including the return.
I also separate entry from extras. A shower, a private room, a premium drink, or additional time may cost more even when the lounge visit is included, and “unlimited visits” does not mean an unlimited stay on each visit. Once I’m inside, I keep the boarding time in view and leave enough time for the gate; getting comfortable is useful, but a lounge visit shouldn’t become the reason I have to rush across the terminal.
Would I pay for access if I didn’t already have it?
For a long wait with a comfortable lounge, a usable food selection, and enough time to settle in, I would compare the entry price with what I’d otherwise spend at the airport. For a short departure, a packed room, or a family facing several guest charges, I would be much less interested. Having access has been useful on many of my trips, particularly around Southeast Asia, but I still want the lounge to fit the journey. I’m happy to use the Golden Lounge when the wait and the flight make sense, and equally happy to go straight to the gate when they don’t.
Access details checked October 8, 2026. Photos show my visits on their respective travel dates; current entry rules and services may differ.
