Top 10 luxury resorts in Langkawi

Beaches, privacy and service: ten different resort experiences, counted down from number 10 to my first choice.

A sea-view upgrade sounds like an easy yes—until the room is farther from the beach. Exceptional service, meanwhile, can make a less compelling location feel worthwhile. Those are the details I weigh when choosing a resort in Langkawi. When beach, privacy and service do not all point to the same property, which one deserves first place?

My countdown, from 10 to 1

Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa, Langkawi

Pantai Cenang

Malay-style chalets & Cenang life

Malay-village-inspired wooden chalets give Pelangi its distinctive character on Pantai Cenang. The low-rise accommodation has a different character from a modern hotel block. Across its extensive grounds, rooms, suites and several dining venues make it possible to spend an easy day within the resort.

I would shortlist it for families and travellers wanting a resort atmosphere close to Cenang’s everyday life. It is less secluded than Datai or Tanjung Rhu, with convenience as the trade-off. Check chalet placement and the booked view so the room suits the holiday you have in mind.

Ambong Pool Villas

Private pools & a smaller setting

Ambong Pool Villas offers nine villas with private pools and sea views from a wooded hillside. Its small scale makes it an appealing alternative to the larger resorts here. Some villas face sunrise and others sunset, so orientation is worth considering. It is distinct from Ambong Rainforest Retreat, although the two share the brand and some facilities.

I would shortlist it for couples prioritising privacy, a pool of their own and time in the villa. The hillside setting offers a different holiday from stepping directly onto the sand. Confirm access and getting-around arrangements if mobility is a consideration.

The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa

Kuah

A resort I return to often

The Westin offers Superior and Superior Patio rooms, plus Garden View, Partial Sea View and Sea View options. Rooms with two queen beds are a practical option for families travelling with children. Select the bed configuration and permitted occupancy that suit your group.

I usually receive Partial Sea View or Sea View upgrades, but often decline Sea View because those rooms are farther from the beach. Partial Sea View, especially in the right wing, already feels spot on for how I enjoy the resort.

For more space, there are one- and two-bedroom suites, alongside private-pool villas with one, two or five bedrooms. Families can choose a regular room, a suite with separate living space or a villa for time together. I have never received a complimentary suite upgrade; my villa stay came through a RM200 paid upgrade. Overall service has been ordinary in my experience, but the right room location and familiarity still bring me back.

The children’s pool and main infinity pool provide space for families, while the adults-only pool at Heavenly Spa looks across the water towards Kayuputi. The spa area suits a quieter afternoon. The Westin also has an Ocean Rock Pool. This variety is one reason I am happy to spend a full day at the resort.

PARKROYAL Langkawi Resort

Modern design & a convenient location

At Pantai Tengah, PARKROYAL combines beach access with proximity to restaurants and Cenang. The beachfront-level pool suits family time, while the fifth-floor Sky Pool is reserved for adults. Rooms, suites and villas provide options for different group sizes, with children’s facilities adding to the family appeal.

It is a good candidate when you want resort time with easy access to meals and outings around Cenang. Its seven villas offer beach access, a different experience from the main building’s rooms. DISCOVERY members can check the benefits applicable to their booking.

06

Tanjung Rhu Resort

Tanjung Rhu

Northern beach & room to unwind

Tanjung Rhu Resort faces the broad northern shoreline, with limestone islets forming part of its beach panorama. Suite options face the courtyard, gardens or sea, while several dining venues and an adult pool allow different ways to spend a quiet day. It suits a holiday centred on the beach and the property.

I would compare it with Four Seasons when Tanjung Rhu is the preferred location, looking at the actual suite and package total. Its separation from the busier strips is the attraction. Evenings out around Cenang require more planning and travel.

05

The Danna Langkawi

Pantai Kok / Telaga Harbour

Classic elegance by the sea

Colonial-Mediterranean buildings and a courtyard give The Danna its classic character on Pantai Kok, beside Telaga Harbour marina. Accommodation ranges from rooms and suites to private-pool beach villas. Views also differ, taking in mountains, marina, courtyard or sea.

It makes sense for travellers drawn to a classic hotel setting and the western sights, including SkyCab. Start by choosing the view and room type that suit the trip. Choose a beach villa for a private pool and direct beach access.

04

The St. Regis Langkawi

Personal service & fine dining

I choose St. Regis for its service. Its location near Kuah appeals to me less, and I do not rate its beach alongside Datai Bay or Tanjung Rhu. The resort’s strengths lie in how guests are looked after, the comfort of its suites and fine dining at Kayuputi.

The difference was evident from arrival. The team explained FHR benefits without my having to ask, while our butler anticipated our needs throughout the stay. A Penthouse Suite upgrade was certainly welcome, especially its large balcony with an approximately 180-degree panorama. What made the experience stand out against the Ritz-Carlton, however, was the more proactive, personal care.

Room choices include Premier Rainforest and Andaman Sea View. St. Regis Suites add living space, while St. Regis Pool Suites have their own plunge pools. Panoramic, Penthouse and Astor Suites offer further options for a larger suite stay.

Over the water, the one-bedroom Sunset Overwater Villa has separate living and dining rooms. The Sunset Royal Villa has four bedrooms. Both categories include a terrace and private pool, appealing when privacy and time together matter most.

Kayuputi is an overwater fine-dining restaurant, serving contemporary pan-Asian cuisine in a space designed by Bill Bensley. Chef Marco Portal now heads its kitchen, while the Gastronomy Series brings visiting chefs together for special collaborative menus. Kayuputi has received recognition from Travel + Leisure Asia’s Best Awards 2022 and appeared in Tatler’s Top 20 Restaurants in Malaysia.

Our meal at Kayuputi felt personal: attentive staff, carefully executed dishes and sunset views that completed the evening. For me, it belongs among Malaysia’s best fine-dining experiences. This is a reason to give St. Regis time, even though its beach is not my first choice. I also rated breakfast alongside the Ritz-Carlton’s, with the à la carte Laksa Utara a favourite.

03

The Ritz-Carlton, Langkawi

A stay surrounded by rainforest

What I love most about the Ritz-Carlton Langkawi is the forest around the accommodation. Greenery follows the resort paths towards the coast, creating a lush, private setting. Horizon Pool is where I want to spend the afternoon facing the sea and sunset.

Like The Datai, the Ritz-Carlton draws its character from an existing coastal forest. Its architects spent roughly a year positioning buildings around trees, rocks and views. Earthworks were avoided to retain the site, and some structures were placed on rocks to reduce tree felling. Those construction choices allowed the original forest to continue shaping the resort: lush, sheltered and private.

Accommodation starts with Rainforest Deluxe rooms and Rainforest Junior Suites. Private-pool choices include Rainforest Villas, Beach Villas with direct beach access, and the sea-facing Ocean Front and Grand Ocean Front Villas. Each places guests differently within the forest and coastline.

At the most luxurious end, Villa Kenari has two bedrooms, while Villa Mutiara offers three bedrooms, two private pools and access to its own beach. These provide an ultra-luxury option for families or groups seeking greater privacy and shared living space.

02

Four Seasons Resort Langkawi

Tanjung Rhu

Wide white sands & limestone islets

Wide white sands, a private beach and limestone islets offshore: this is the defining view at Four Seasons in Tanjung Rhu. The resort’s shoreline extends for roughly 1.5 kilometres, opening towards the Andaman Sea. Its generous stretch of sand gives the place a distinctly spacious feel, while those limestone formations distinguish the panorama from other resort beaches on the island.

Low-rise pavilions and villas sit among tropical gardens. Malay and Moorish influences meet in high ceilings, tropical woods, arched openings and living spaces that extend outdoors. For me, the generous accommodation and privacy are central to its appeal, alongside the beach itself.

Garden and partial sea-view pavilions offer around 68 m². For a private beachfront base, the 220 m² Beach Villa with Pool includes its own pool and a terrace close to the sand. A pavilion provides room to spread out while enjoying the wider resort; a beach villa gives more space to spend much of the day in your own accommodation.

The Geo Spa sits among forested limestone cliffs and reflecting pools; mangrove outings and sea kayaking reveal another side of Tanjung Rhu. For booking benefits, Four Seasons offers Elite recognition by invitation to selected guests. Preferred Partner is available through participating travel advisors, with breakfast and resort credit according to the reservation terms.

The Datai Langkawi

Datai Bay, deep in the rainforest

At Datai Bay, rainforest reaches a crescent of white sand, with a fringing coral reef offshore and Gunung Mat Cincang behind it. To me, this is a fantasy landscape. I struggle to think of another resort setting in Langkawi, or elsewhere in Malaysia, with quite this combination of beach, reef and forested mountain. National Geographic featured Datai Bay in its 2015 Top 10: Beaches selection.

The Datai stands inside the rainforest. The Sungai Datai flows through the villa and spa grounds, linking the forest to the sea. The main building sits on a wooded ridge roughly 300 metres back from the beach; Kerry Hill’s design limited tree felling and retained as much of the original landscape as possible. The Datai Pledge continues that conservation work through coral restoration and forest habitat projects. Dense greenery, the river and the bay give the resort its extraordinary sense of seclusion.

The Canopy, Rainforest and Beach collections place guests in different parts of that landscape. Rainforest Villas bring daily life close to the trees and Sungai Datai; Beach Villas have enclosed gardens, direct access to the sand and 24-hour butler service. This is the personal luxury I associate with The Datai: privacy, space and care tailored to the guest. Resident naturalists and marine biologists also help guests discover the forest and shore.

For me, The Datai belongs among Malaysia’s best resorts and occupies its most premium price bracket. Tatler has featured its beach villas among the country’s most expensive suites and villas. Past international guests include Phil Collins and Jodie Foster; Foster stayed while filming Anna and the King in Langkawi in 1999. The celebrity history and personal service accompany its most distinctive asset: a resort within the rainforest, beside Datai Bay.

Westin and St. Regis: enjoying both resorts

The Westin and St. Regis are neighbours, and in my experience guests staying at either can use facilities at both resorts. A complimentary shuttle or buggy connects them. Staying at the Westin therefore leaves room to enjoy St. Regis, while St. Regis guests can also visit the Westin and Heavenly Spa.

Cross room charging makes payment convenient: spending at the neighbouring resort can be added to the room account where I am staying. The concierge can confirm the included facilities, shuttle arrangements and charges that can be transferred during the visit.

Transfers when changing resorts

For a split stay between Marriott hotels in Langkawi, a transfer can be arranged through the concierge. The Ritz-Carlton once organised a limo for my move to the Westin. I remember paying around RM150, although I cannot recall the exact amount. Request a quotation for your journey, as the price depends on the vehicle and current arrangements.

Before booking, compare the same room category, breakfast, transfers, cancellation terms and total after charges. The lowest headline rate on one date may not be the best package for your trip. If several days will be spent exploring, a split stay can leave more time to properly enjoy the resort you choose.
