For me, Surabaya is a practical base for Mount Bromo, with room in the trip for comfortable hotels, meals and shopping. I usually stay in the city and arrange for a guide to collect me at midnight for the sunrise trip. That means the preparation starts as soon as I reach the hotel: time to sleep belongs in the itinerary.
I have visited Surabaya and Bromo twice: solo in December 2023, then with a group of seven in May 2024. The second trip also included Tumpak Sewu. Both visits taught me something about this part of East Java: the scenery is worth the journey, but so is having time to sleep afterwards.
An afternoon arrival, a nap and a midnight departure
My flight usually arrives in the afternoon. I go straight from the airport to the hotel, check in and sleep to save some energy. Dinner comes after that, followed by getting ready for a pickup around midnight. I keep the arrival day light because the journey to Bromo takes up much of the night.
At around 3 AM, we reach the Bromo area and change to a Jeep for the drive to the sunrise viewpoint. It is still early and dark. I would have warm clothes ready at this stage, rather than leaving them in the main suitcase back at the hotel.
These are the timings from my usual trip flow. The guide should confirm the actual schedule around the hotel location, route, road conditions and sunrise time for the travel date.
For my solo visit, I flew Malaysia Airlines from Penang to Kuala Lumpur, then on to Surabaya. I stayed five nights at JW Marriott Hotel Surabaya. I paid cash rather than redeeming points because the room rate felt affordable to me. A hotel participating in a loyalty programme does not mean every stay needs to be a redemption.
I booked Bromo with Ryan, a young local guide who spoke fluent English. On my first trip he picked me up at the hotel at 12:00am sharp. We reached the Bromo area at about 3:00am and changed into a jeep for the mountain section. By around 4:00am, we were near the viewpoint and had time to sit with a coffee.
Sunrise was around 5:30am on that visit. We walked to the viewing spot. Having the road transfer and jeep arranged meant I could concentrate on the morning rather than negotiate each part of the journey while half asleep.
Coffee while waiting for sunrise
The viewpoint is cold in the early morning. While we wait for sunrise, the guide treats us to coffee. It is one of the small details I remember from the trip: waiting in the cold with a hot coffee before the landscape becomes clear.
I usually spend about an hour taking photographs around sunrise and as the light comes up. If photography is a big reason for the trip, leave some time for this part. There is no need to rush down as soon as the sun appears.
The coffee was part of my experience with the guide. Check what your own tour includes when booking. It is also worth confirming the viewpoint, as different tours may use different locations.

Bromo temperatures by month: prepare for a cold morning
The Bromo highlands are much colder before sunrise than Surabaya. July can be particularly cold: allow for temperatures close to 2°C on some mornings. Use the monthly table as packing guidance and check the forecast for your actual travel date.
| Month | Approximate early morning · 03:00–06:00 |
|---|---|
| January | 8–12°C |
| February | 8–12°C |
| March | 6–10°C |
| April | 6–10°C |
| May | 5–8°C |
| June | 2–5°C |
| July | 2–5°C |
| August | 2–5°C |
| September | 6–10°C |
| October | 6–10°C |
| November | 8–12°C |
| December | 8–12°C |
These ranges come from a local travel operator’s early-morning Bromo guide. They are approximate packing guidance, not official monthly averages or a forecast for a particular date. Months in the same seasonal group share a range; actual temperatures vary with location and weather.
BMKG links the cooler dry-season conditions to the Australian monsoon and cooling at night. For sunrise, pack layers, a fleece or sweater, a wind-resistant jacket, a beanie, gloves and closed shoes. Wind at the viewpoint can also make the morning feel colder than the forecast number suggests.
The landscape changes colour with the seasons, too. In drier conditions, the grass on the hills and savanna takes on golden, brown and orange tones. After rain, the grassy areas look greener. Both settings make an interesting backdrop for photographs. The seasonal colour change is most noticeable in the vegetation and surrounding hills, with the sunrise light adding its own warmth to the scene.

Down to the crater: I take the horse, then climb the stairs
After sunrise, we head down towards the crater. I prefer taking a horse for the section to the foot of the crater rather than walking across. It is my personal choice, especially after travelling through the night and spending time at the viewpoint.
The horse takes you to the area below the staircase. You then get off and climb the stairs yourself to reach the crater rim. The horse stays below. Choosing the horse still leaves a section of walking and stair climbing.
Before setting off, confirm the price, whether the ride is a return journey and where to meet the handler again. Check the horse fee separately from the Jeep package, because tour arrangements can differ.

After the crater, we go for a buffet breakfast at a restaurant near Bromo. Following a midnight departure, it is a welcome stop before the journey back to Surabaya. Ask your guide where breakfast will be, whether it is a buffet or a separate menu, and whether it is included in the tour price.
At around seven, we left for Pasir Berbisik, stopped for photographs, then continued to the foot of the crater. I hired a horse for about IDR100,000 to reach the staircase. The horse helped with that section; I still had to climb the steps, and they felt quite high.
Fairfield first for a group, JW Marriott after Bromo
JW Marriott is where I usually stay in Surabaya. When travelling in a group and booking several rooms, though, I like to start at Fairfield by Marriott Surabaya to keep the cost down. In my experience, it is the cheaper option for the first part of the trip, when much of the time is spent sleeping, getting ready and heading out to Bromo.

To follow this flow, I would book two nights at Fairfield: the arrival night and the night after Bromo. That keeps the room available for a shower and sleep when you return around midday. A one-night booking may leave the return time close to check-out. Moving to JW Marriott the following day gives the itinerary more room to breathe.
Rates depend on the dates and room categories. Compare the total for every room in the group before booking. Fairfield is my cost-saving approach for this trip; it will not necessarily be the cheapest option on every date.

On the following morning, we checked out early. Ryan picked us up at about 8:00am for Tumpak Sewu, and we brought all our luggage. It worked as a day trip and a hotel transfer: we left Fairfield and, after the waterfall visit, he dropped us at JW Marriott Surabaya.
At JW Marriott Surabaya, I received an upgrade to a Residential Suite with a kitchen and a washer/dryer. After the Tumpak Sewu day, that was perfect. Having a proper space to settle into, and laundry facilities in the room, made the return to the city feel especially comfortable.
The food is a big reason I like JW Surabaya. Breakfast had a large selection, and I thought it was delicious. The evening cocktail hors d’oeuvres were unusually generous on my stay: lots of choices, including hot food. The spread felt almost like breakfast in its variety, rather than a few small snacks.
I also had a two-hour hot stone massage for around IDR500,000. I found it very good value, and I loved it. A trip can include sunrise and a demanding hike, then an afternoon where the plan is simply to recover at the hotel. For me, the spa was part of what made JW worth returning to.
Hotel choices by loyalty programme and location
For Marriott Bonvoy members, Surabaya offers choices from Fairfield and Aloft to JW Marriott, Sheraton and Westin. I would choose the area first: central Surabaya for Tunjungan, the west for Pakuwon Mall, or the east if that fits the rest of the trip.
| Hotel · Marriott Bonvoy | Area | How I would choose |
|---|---|---|
| JW Marriott Hotel Surabaya | Central Surabaya, near Tunjungan Plaza | My usual choice for a luxury stay after Bromo. |
| Fairfield by Marriott Surabaya | Mayjen Sungkono, near Ciputra World | My practical group option when booking several rooms before Bromo. |
| The Westin Surabaya | West Surabaya, connected to Pakuwon Mall | A luxury alternative for combining the hotel stay with shopping. |
| Sheraton Surabaya Hotel & Towers | Central Surabaya, connected to Tunjungan Plaza | A practical full-service choice for the Tunjungan area. |
| Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya, Tunjungan Plaza | Central Surabaya, connected to Tunjungan Plaza | Another Bonvoy option with direct mall access. |
| Four Points by Sheraton Surabaya, Pakuwon Indah | West Surabaya, connected to Pakuwon Mall | Worth comparing with Westin for a stay in the same shopping area. |
| Aloft by Marriott Surabaya Pakuwon City | East Surabaya, beside Pakuwon City Mall | A contemporary option. Pakuwon City is separate from the Pakuwon Mall area in the west. |
JW Marriott and Fairfield are my personal choices. The other hotels in these tables are alternatives to compare by location, stay style and rate.

| Hotel | Loyalty programme | Area & stay style |
|---|---|---|
| DoubleTree by Hilton Surabaya | Hilton Honors | Central Surabaya on Jalan Tunjungan; a full-service choice for Hilton members. |
| Hotel Majapahit Surabaya – MGallery Collection | ALL Accor | A heritage hotel in the Tunjungan area, with classic architecture and gardens. |
| Mövenpick Surabaya City | ALL Accor | An Accor full-service alternative with rooms and suites. |
| Novotel Samator Surabaya Timur | ALL Accor | An east Surabaya option if that location suits the trip. |
| Holiday Inn Express Surabaya CenterPoint | IHG One Rewards | A limited-service central option with Express Start Breakfast included. |
| Shangri-La Surabaya | Shangri-La Circle | A luxury alternative on Jalan Mayjen Sungkono. |
| Wyndham Surabaya City Centre | Wyndham Rewards | A central hotel on Jalan Basuki Rahmat, with rooms and suites. |
For Hyatt, Hyatt Centric West Surabaya is still listed as pipeline in the official development directory. It is therefore outside this guide’s operating hotel choices. If World of Hyatt is a priority, confirm the opening and official booking status before planning a stay.
When comparing cash rates and points, look at what the room rate includes. Breakfast, lounge access, upgrades and late check-out depend on the property, room category, status and booking terms. For this itinerary, the practical priority is having a room to return to after Bromo.

An easy evening in Surabaya: Grab, malls and shopping
My time in Surabaya is usually centred on the hotel, food, malls and shopping. I do not try to fill every afternoon with attractions, especially after Bromo. Taking Grab to one area, having dinner and walking around is enough for a relaxed evening.
Tunjungan Plaza fits well with a central hotel stay. Pakuwon Mall is in west Surabaya, by Westin and Four Points Pakuwon Indah. For a stay at Fairfield, Ciputra World is in the Mayjen Sungkono area. Choose a mall around the hotel location rather than filling one evening with stops across the city.
If you want to add some sightseeing, city options include Kota Lama, Tugu Pahlawan and the Submarine Monument. Pick one or two that interest you. In my itinerary, Surabaya is a comfortable base between the nature trips and time to rest.

A suggested five-day, four-night trip with time to recover
This suggested itinerary combines my Bromo flow with another day trip. It can be shortened if you only want Bromo and some time in Surabaya.
This is a suggested alternative, not the exact May 2024 itinerary. On that trip, Ryan collected us at Fairfield around 8 AM with all our luggage, took us to Tumpak Sewu for the day and dropped us at JW Marriott afterwards.
| Day | Plan | Hotel |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Afternoon flight arrival → check-in → sleep → dinner → midnight pickup. | Fairfield · night 1 |
| Day 2 | Change to a Jeep around 3 AM → viewpoint and sunrise → crater → buffet breakfast → return around midday → rest → an evening out with Grab if you have the energy. | Fairfield · night 2 |
| Day 3 | Check out and move to JW Marriott. Rest, shop or add light sightseeing, and arrange the next day trip. | JW Marriott · night 3 |
| Day 4 | One full-day excursion, such as Tumpak Sewu, or another relaxed day in Surabaya. | JW Marriott · night 4 |
| Day 5 | Breakfast, check-out and an airport transfer around the flight schedule. | — |
Tumpak Sewu was also part of my trip. For an itinerary based in Surabaya, I would give it a separate day after recovering from the Bromo visit. The waterfall is on the Malang–Lumajang border, with access from Sidomulyo in Pronojiwo. Discuss with the guide whether you want the panorama from above or a descent to the lower area. That choice affects how much time and energy to allow.

For another day out, you could consider the Malang or Batu area for a different city setting. Ask the guide to build the route around your hotel and one main purpose for the day. I would keep Surabaya as the base and leave one full day for each larger excursion.

What to confirm before booking a Bromo tour
Ask for a quotation listing hotel pickup and drop-off, transport between Surabaya and Bromo, the Jeep, the chosen viewpoint, entrance tickets, breakfast and any additional fees. Confirm whether the guide accompanies the whole journey or meets you in the Bromo area. If you want a horse ride, ask whether it is charged separately.
For visitors using a Malaysian passport, check the foreign-visitor ticket category and booking arrangements through the official Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park website or the guide handling the visit. A rate shown for Indonesian visitors may differ from the foreign-visitor rate.
My approach starts with a simple decision: sleep when I arrive in Surabaya. Bromo becomes the early highlight, followed by time to return to the hotel, recover, shop and enjoy JW Marriott before deciding on the next excursion.
